Society of St Vincent De Paul Sandwich Run

Together, we can make a difference

The SVP (St Vincent de Paul Society) is part of an international Christian voluntary network dedicated to tackling poverty in all its forms by providing practical assistance to people in need. Founded in Britain in 1844, we foster diverse and inclusive connections, as a Society that is welcoming of people of all faiths and none. We joyfully extend our hand in the care and personal service of individuals and families who need support.

Our 10,000 members, motivated by faith, visit vulnerable or isolated people across England and Wales and offer them friendship and practical support. The essence of our work is person-to-person contact and spending time with people is our greatest gift.

Time commitment: One hour to two hours per week

The Newman House SVP Soup Run is an in-house volunteering project set up to serve the homeless along Tottenham Court Road. If you are passionate about helping the homeless then this project is for you.

There are two arms to the Newman House SVP Sandwich/Soup Run project. The first team of volunteers make the sandwiches ready for the second team to handout on the streets. Because there is a Rota system you can volunteer for both arms if you wish, i.e., one week you could make the sandwiches and the next week you could be on the team that distribute the food and drink to the homeless. As a quick summary of the project, every (day of the week to be confirmed) we go down Tottenham Court Road handing out Coffee, Tea, and Sandwiches to rough sleepers.

Time commitment: around 1-2 hours per week. A separate group of volunteers makes the sandwiches earlier in the day.  This usually takes about 1 hour.

This project run and organised by students who attend the Newman House Catholic Chaplaincy, and it is open to students from all universities. This is a great opportunity to volunteer alongside students from different colleges. There is a training day in the first term followed by a reflection/evaluation meeting in the second term.
